Q&A: Should my college admissions essay relate to my intended major?

Q: Should my college admissions essay relate to my intended major?

A: Depends. If your application is for graduate school where you generally already have a field of study chosen, or for direct admission into an undergrad college like X University’s College of Education, you should definitely tie your main application essay into your future major or focus area. You want to clearly articulate in your essay why you chose X major or why you’re a good fit for Y program as a result of your experiences and background. If the college application essay is for undergraduate admission in general, you’re safe writing about whatever you want as long as what you write fits the essay prompt.

On the other hand, some college applications require applicants to submit a supplemental essay that specifically asks why you want to go to their college or why you chose X major or field of study. So, you can also write your potential major there, if required.
